Chauara Tannery in Fes is hidden by the buildings that surround it and the main access for tourists is through the many shops in the area and up onto their balconies for the view. Armed with sprigs of mint to shield your nose from the stench of the bird droppings that are used to clean the skins that arrive you can look down on the process below.
Most tourists crowd onto balconies and jostle for position to capture their photographs, I however found myself in the company of someone who could take me for a closer view. My guide worked in the shop but had family in the tannery, he was quite open about a 20dh donation to 'the man' and a donation to him as my guide, refreshing honesty after our walk through the Fes medina and its touts.
